Read a Story!
This wonderful story was written by one of my younger students, called Sara, and was inspired by reading Edward Lear's poem 'The Jumblies'...
**WARNING - THERE IS A SURPRISE ENDING!**
There were several gallant men. They were all identical in
idiosyncratic ways as they had a preposterous idea. Their absurd idea was to go
to space in a bowl. They were minute, the size of dwarfs and had the same
sapphire eyes with a tinge of avidness in each. Along with their bulbous noses
that always stuck out, they were all abhorrent. Just absolutely ugly.
You see, no one liked the dwarfs and despised them because
of their height. When the dwarfs broadcasted their leaving for space, they just
laughed cruelly.
“No way you will make it alive! One thing I believe is that
you will successfully fit in that bowl!” exclaimed a giant-like man. Everyone burst
into laughter. The dwarfs needed to prove their point. Now.
Fear grabbed their hearts. Trepidation crept through their
veins. Fretfulness reigned supreme. Roaming through a secluded part of
space, they reached their first planet. Mercury. Like the moon, its arsenic
craters towered over the dwarfs like a skyscraper, while trying to suck them
into death.
Fear, a supreme oppressor. Fear, a supreme ruler. Fear, a
supreme tyrant. Living their lives in surreal hell, they decided to take a nap,
trying to forget the past’s actions . Unsheathing the spoon like a sword,
the dwarfs placed their heads on the miniature spoon. Then, they opened an
ornate napkin which had engravings of flowers on it. Without further ado, they
were sound asleep.
Ecstasy filled their lungs. Joy was a tidal wave. Joviality
washed their souls. The dwarfs careered through the moon. The pageant of
happiness marched steadily across them. Reaching the moon shop in time, they
bounded towards it. “Is this the moonshop?” asked one of the dwarfs. As
the other dwarfs nodded their head in rhythm, they shopped and shopped until
they were ready.
Elation punched Anguish. Gaiety punched Despondency. Merriment
punched Poignancy. As they found out it was the best time to leave, they
boarded the rocket ship. As they returned to earth, streaks of blue painted the
sky like a canvas. Buildings filled the places of the once verdant trees. It
was a new world. A new world that had once been different 50 years ago. They
had been exploring space for 50 years.
Realisation slammed. Astonishment slammed. Shock slammed.
With a broad grin encrusted in their faces, they waved and beamed and smiled at
their fellow folks. There was the giant-like man, flushing with
embarrassment. They were an inspiration to the world.
They were smart all along. They had brains all along. They
proved everyone wrong all along. Then, randomly, they started coughing, then
spluttering blood, then death. Their eyes were fixated with the heavens above, waiting
peacefully for death’s tsunami. That was the end of them.
