When is your English vocabulary big enough?

by Jenny Hartland

One of the reasons for starting EAL lessons is to improve your English vocabulary. But when does that process stop?

Apparently there are over one million words in the English language. But even the average native English speaker only has a vocabulary of between 20-30,000 of those words.

So there will always be more English words to learn - for all of us! But that can be a challenge to embrace.

As one of those native English speakers, I love the way that the English language keeps surprising me with words I haven’t discovered before.

Just this week I learned the topical word ‘papable’ (meaning ‘capable of being the pope’). It was such a clever word that it made me smile and want to share it with other people.

So let’s all enjoy learning new vocabulary together - native and second language speakers alike!
