How to Study or Revise a Literature Text (1) - Overview

As an English tutor, I am often asked to help students improve their ability to study and write about literature text. The first thing to do (after the student has read the text, of course!) is to get an overview of the text . This means being able to stand back and see the wood for the trees. How does it all fit together? What's important at the beginning? How do things develop? How does it end? There are some very practical exercises I use to help students quickly get an overview of texts they are studying either at GCSE or A Level. How to Write in an Exam (1) - Reading the Question

GCSE English Language exams expect you to demonstrate your writing skills. But before you can write, you need to know what you are writing about , and this is where many students lose marks. There are some simple techniques you can learn to ensure that even under the stress of an exam you will still read the question carefully. I recommend reading each question at least twice and underlining the key words. It's a technique that helps the mind focus on what is actually there, not what students THINK is there! How to Achieve Top Grades in Writing

How do you achieve top grades in writing tasks - for example in GCSE English Language? I'm often asked this question as an English tutor. One of the ways I've devised to help students improve their writing is by helping them develop the variety and complexity of the sentence structures they use. I've written an ebook, called The Five Sentence Types Workbook to help students with this skill. Students have often not learnt how to use commas correctly. Students often don't understand the difference between main clauses and subordinate clauses. And you do need to understand these grammatical points if you are going to write really well! "How Do I Learn Quotations?"

To do well in English Literature at both GCSE and A Level, students need to memorise quotations. But some students find it difficult to know how to do this. There are a number of key steps in the process: developing an overview of the whole text identifying quotations which are worth knowing learning the actual quotations A technique I use with my students is known as dual coding (see my previous post on using dual coding to learn new vocabulary here ) This highly effective, and fun, technique, involves writing the quotation as part of a quick sketch (great artistic skill is not required!) that is associated with the quotation.
